New Blog, Go At a Walking Pace

Jason Hood, one of our newer SAET Fellows, has recently started blogging. He is joined by two friends — one a pastor and the other a plumber. I think “Two Pastors and a Plumber” would have been a better name for the blog, but they didn’t ask me.

Jason was a former student of Michael Bird, who calmly notes that Jason “is the chosen one to bring together the Methodists, Presbyterians, and Anglicans into formal and visible union.” A tall order, to be sure.

For all of you feed readers, I invite you to click through and take a look at the new SAET website design. My brother Todd is a free-lance web designer and he did a great job freshening us up. We may have a few tweaks to make and glitches to find, but I’m very pleased with the new look. If you’re looking for a web designer, I encourage you to give Todd a call. He’s done quite a few church and ministry sites, as well as commercial projects.

Or to say it again another way: The point of most pastor-theologian programs is to get more theology into the local church. The mission of the SAET is to get more of the local church into theology.

Reformation 21 Article

The kind folks over at Reformation 21 have posted my article, “Ecclesial Theology and Academic Theology: Why We Need More of the Former.”

The article briefly recounts the founding of the SAET, and is my latest attempt to flesh out a distinction between academic theology and ecclesial theology. If you read it and have thoughts, I’m interested to hear them.

The SAET Blog: Where You Can Now Find Eccleisal Theology, Not Just Stuff About Ecclesial Theology

Well, up till now I’ve pretty much only written about eccleisal theology here on the SAET blog. I haven’t really written much actual ecclesial theology itself. Most of that sort of thing was taking place (if at all) over at my original blog, Iustificare.

But a new day is dawning here at the SAET. After careful consultation with the executive director, the decision was made to widen the scope of the SAET blog to include all issues related to theology and the life of the church. So in addition to the already (stimulating, I’m sure) posts about eccleisal theology, SAET readers will now be able to enjoy actual examples of ecclesial theology in miniature. Of course, given the not-so-rapid pace of my blogging, readers shouldn’t expect to be inundated.

In an attempt to offset my blogging irregularlity, I’ll be inviting our SAET Fellows to contribute on occasional post, as they desire and are able. But those of you in pastoral ministry, who are also working on research projects, know how difficult it can be to find time for blogging. Having properly lowered all expectations, let’s get going!

My good friend and fellow SAET board member, Owen Strachen, has pulled together a great event via his role as the managing director of the Carl F. H. Henry Center for Theological Understanding. The Henry Center shares a similar mission emphasis as the SAET, and they regularly host fantastic events. Here’s a brief write up of the Piper/Carson event from Owen’s blog:

In just two weeks, on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Park Community Church in Chicago, IL, the Carl F. H. Henry Center for Theological Understanding of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School will host an evening of free lectures and discussion with Dr. John Piper of Bethlehem Baptist Church and Dr. D. A. Carson of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. The event will begin at 7:00pm and conclude around 10:00pm.

If you’re in the area (or even if you’re not), and you have a heart for scholarship and the local church, this sounds like an event you won’t want to miss. But if you do miss it, don’t worry. More from Owen…

The evening will be recorded in high-definition by Desiring God Ministries and live-blogged by the Henry Center. All material will be available for free at DGM, The Gospel Coalition website, and the Henry Center website.
